General chore milestones by age group

Toddlers & Preschoolers (Ages 2–4)

Focus on simple one-step tasks with immediate outcomes: putting toys in bins, throwing away napkins, and putting dirty clothes in the hamper.

Early Elementary (Ages 5–7)

Kids can handle multi-step routines: making their bed, setting the dinner table, watering houseplants, and feeding household pets.

Upper Elementary (Ages 8–10)

Capable of more independent chores: loading or unloading the dishwasher, vacuuming rooms, sweeping floors, and taking out the trash.

Middle School & Tweens (Ages 11–14)

Responsible household contributions: doing their own laundry, cleaning bathrooms, preparing simple meals, and caring for younger siblings or pets.
